TIME TO SHINE DANCE COMPS
Syllabus & Rules 2021
GENERAL
It is understood that by entering Time To Shine Dance Competitions, you AGREE & UNDERSTAND ALL rules listed below;
1. Time to Shine Dance Comps its open to amateurs only with exception to the Adult / Mature Age Section. An amateur is any person under the age of 18 whose main source of income is not derived from dance.
2. Time to Shine Dance Comps is a family Competition. Music, choreography and costumes must be suitable for family viewing. Failure to comply will result in disqualification.
3. All entries must be made honestly.
AGE
1. Solo, Duo, Trio Age: is as at the first day of January
2. Troupe Age: is AVERAGE AGE based on age as at 1 January year of competition.
3. TTS reserves the right to request proof of age (supplied at competitors expense), and can, at their discretion, withhold any prizes until this is produced
4. Competitors may dance up an age group, dancing down an age group is not permitted.
5. Duos/Trios – all competitors must be within the stated age limit.
6. Groups – all competitors in a nominated age group must be within the average age limit.

Soloist $40.00 per dancer (All soloist must have a competitor pass)
Troupe Only $15 per dancer (All troupe dancers must have a competitor pass)
CATEGORY DEFINITIONS
1. SOLO- NOVICE/RESTRICTED – TTS does not have novice or restricted sections
2. OPEN – ALL dancers are permitted to dance in open sections levels at TTS. Competitors who place in any of our sections may be required to perform in Open in that discipline, at other future Competitions.
3. Troupes – must contain a minimum of four competitors. A maximum of four entries per section per studio is permitted.
4. Troupes must have a minimum number of 4 members.
5. There must be 3 interchangeable members of the troupe where multiple routines are performed.
6. Small Troupes 15 or less members – Large Troupes 16 plus members.
7. School Groups – To qualify as a school group, the routine must be learned at school in a school environment, not as part of a dance school environment. The group may contain students from a dance school.
8. It is understood that troupes will be combined small/large/school groups if numbers in sections are low. Troupes will never be combined with age groups more than the next age section.
9. Improvisation – Music will be chosen by the Adjudicator. The competitors in this section will perform onstage at one time, audition style. Dancers will listen to the music once, and then immediately perform to the same track onstage. In the instance that there are a lot of competitors, we may split the section into heats, Scores will be tallied form heats & place winners awarded. Dress requirements for improvisation are plain BLACK dance attire. No costumes or hair bling or large logos. Black skirt & or black fitted shorts may be worn. Boys; black T shirt & black shorts
DUO/TRIOS
1. Dates of birth and names of all competitors must be declared at entry – and all competitors must be within the stated age category
2. An individual may enter a duo or trio with a different partner. The maximum number of times an individual can enter the same duo/trio section is two. Be
STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY
1. The routine must be totally choreographed and performed by the student.
2. No teacher assistance may be given. We rely on your honesty for this section.
3. The student may enter a maximum of 2 student choreography routines, providing they are of different dance styles.
4. The time limit for student choreography routines is a maximum of 3 minutes.
CHAMPIONSHIPS
1. Competitors must have qualified in the general sections as referred to below.
2. In the event that only one competitor is entered the Committee reserves the right to cancel the section or move the competitor up an age grouping if available.
3. Duo/Trio sections are not qualifying sections for Championships.
4. Championship routine must be an ‘unseen’ routine. A change of costume and/or music does not constitute a change of routine.
Ballet Championships
To qualify, competitors must have performed in two previous Open sections, one of which must be a Classical plus have performed in two improvisation sections. One of which must be a classical
Tap Championships
To qualify, competitors must have performed in two previous Open sections, one of which must be a Tap, plus have performed in two improvisation sections. One of which must be a Tap. Competitors will be required to perform one unseen solo, this routine must contain half of both fast & slow tap. (combined tracks is permitted to make one routine.
Jazz Championships
To qualify, competitors must have performed in two previous Open sections, one of which must be a Jazz, plus have performed in two improvisation sections. One of which must be a Jazz. Jazz style may be straight, commercial, or Broadway. Championship routine must be an unseen routine,
Modern Championships
To qualify, competitors must have performed in two previous Open sections, one of which must be a Contemporary, lyrical OR neo classical plus have performed in two improvisation sections. One of which must be a contemporary, lyrical OR neo classical. Championship routine can be, either, Contemporary, lyrical OR Neo Classical, but must be ‘unseen’
Outstanding Entertainment Award
This is open to any dancer and does not require qualification. It can be any genre and can be a repeat or an unseen. This section is not necessarily judged on technique, but is definitely judges on entertainment value.
Ballet Scholarship
Dancer must perform a classical routine & contemporary routine in the solo sections to qualify and must perform ONE Classical routine (can be a variation) and ONE contrasting contemporary routine NO REPEATS
Time to Shine Ultimate Dancer
This is in addition to regular solo. Ultimate dancer is a score based section. The entered routines scores will be tallied, and the top 3 scores of entered routines, will be awarded. Dancers do not need to perform again.
AGE CHAMPION – SHINE AWARD
The highest scoring routine of each age will receive a Age Champion Shine award award. To qualify for this award the dancer must perform in a minimum on one routine
COPYRIGHT
The law of Copyright applies Time to Shine Dance Comps. It is the responsibility of each competitor to adhere to the Act. Your studio APRA number must be included on your entry. This number is available from your studio teacher.
ENTRIES
All entries to be lodged on-line by the closing date (Comps may close early if capacity is reached prior to date) Payments to be made electronically at the time of submitting the entry. Without payment your entry will not be honoured
• Please note: an APRA/AMCOS music playing fee will be added for each item at time of entry (improvisations included).
If entries are not paid (even in the event of closing prior to the listed date) the entry will not be honoured, entries must be paid in full to be included in our program.
If the Competition is unable to go ahead as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic or other catastrophic/unforeseen event, our event may be postponed. If this is the case, ALL entries will be moved to the new dates. If the dancer is unable to attend the new dates, a CREDIT will be provided to attend another Time to Shine Event in the current season. If TTS cancels an event due to Covid, refunds will be offered in line with the refund policy stated in the COVID-19 Plan.
No other refunds (except that of injury, which will be subject to our Injury clause) will be given once entries are received unless the event is Cancelled by TTS.
TTS reserves the right to change competition days or change venues due to unforeseen circumstances.
As TTS has multiple competition throughout Australia, it is possible to transfer your entries to another regional if you can no longer attend the one entered, and if there is space available, However, please try to be sure you are available when making your entry as a transfer fee of $50 is payable to transfer to another regional.
Voluntary credits will incur a $50 fee
If its possible to entertain late entries, A late entry fee will incur a fee of $40 in addition to regular entry fees.
Competitors may enter each Solo Section no more than twice, However, if the competitor performs more than once it will be the responsibility of the competitor to ensure that costume changes do not delay the proceedings on the day.
Routines must be entered in the correct sections, (e.g. a Lyrical cannot be performed in the Contemporary section unless there is no lyrical, or unless the Committee decides to combine sections). Failure to comply may result in disqualification.
Entries that are made under a Dance School account, or a third party, cannot be changes or refunded if you change schools.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Time to Shine is a family run business who make all efforts to ensure that the competition is a fun and friendly environment for all. We welcome feedback and opportunities for improvement. Such feedback must be given directly any of the senior staff members in person or by email to timetoshinedcaus@gmail.com or via our website.
Any dance teacher, representative, dancer, parent or friend that posts negative or inappropriate comment regarding Time to Shine on social media including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram may be excluded from competing without refund and may be banned from entering future competitions.
By entering our Competition you agreeing to all aspects of social media promotion. Please contact us privately if you have any concerns regarding this BEFORE the competition has taken place. Any social media posts will not be removed if you contact us after the fact.
COSTUMING
Time to Shine is a family suitable event and all costumes should be age appropriate. TTS has the right to refuse a performer that has a costume that TTS feels is not age appropriate. Tights must be worn by every competitor wearing hi cut leotard or tutu.
TIME TO SHINE:
1. Reserves the right to refuse anyone entry.
2. Reserves the right to amend the program at any time.
3. Reserves the right to combine or cancel sections should they deem necessary.
4. Reserves the right to add age groups dependent on entries received.
5. Will do all in its power to maintain the advertised adjudicator however it reserves the right to make any changes deemed necessary.
6. Invests the Adjudicator with the power to withhold a prize if he/she does not consider the standard of competition warrants one.
7. ONLY the approved executive members of the TTS Staff, as directed by the director approach the Adjudicator.
8. Reserves the right to adjudicate in any protests and their decision is final.
9. Will make the final decision on any issues that are not covered in the Rules.
DANCE DEFINITIONS
Sections
Jazz, Lyrical, Neo Classical, Hip Hop, Classical, Jazz No tricks, Contemporary, Own Choreography, Musical Theatre, Song & Dance, Demi Character, Any Style, Acro, Vocal Theatre, Vocal Modern, Vocal Any style, Classical Variation, Special Needs , Parent & Child.
Improv (Jazz, Classical, Modern (Neo classical or lyrical), Contemporary, Tap, Hip Hop).
Duo/Trio – Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Lyrical, Any Style, Own Choreo, Tap, Vocal.
If your style does not fit into any of these categories, it can be danced in any style.
GENRE DESCRIPTION & GUIDELINES
Jazz – shall include Jazz, Disco, Cabaret, and Musical Comedy (Musical Theatre) Styles.
Jazz (No Acro) shall include Jazz, Disco, Cabaret, and Musical Comedy (Musical Theatre) Styles, must not include ANY TRICKS.
Lyrical- Style of dance which is more conventional an emotive piece.
Neo Classical – Modern Freestyle classical dance
Classical – Routine must be comprised of Ballet technique incorporating formal classical movements, steps and lines. Dancer should bring rosin to use if floor is slippery.
Hip Hop – commercial style as seen on film clips not to have technical jazz aspects. No classical lines.
Contemporary – Demonstrate balance, flexibility and controlled lines. Alternative shapes & movements
Own Choreography – Routine must be totally choreographed and performed by the student.
Musical Theatre, Must be from a Broadway musical or a Movie. Dancer must nominate which musical or movie performance is based from. May or may not be lip synced.
Song & Dance – No microphones are provided by TTS. Can be any style of dance. No Vocals allowed during entire routine. (5 points will be deducted if routine has lyrics) If using microphones, you must provide all of your own equipment.
Tap – Beats must be taps, fast or slow tap is permitted. Waltz tap is to a ¾ time.
Demi Character – Based on Classical Ballet technique, where the storyline and/or portrayal of a character must be as strong and equal to the dance component.
Acro – Routine which must contain acrobatic/gymnastic passes, walkovers, etc.
Acro may be done in any dance style except where stated no tricks.
Where ‘No tricks’ is stated, this means no acro at all, including cartwheels & walkovers- Allowed is leap, split jump or leg mount. It is compulsory for any routine that contains drops to wear knee pads.
If injury occurs and proper precautions were no taken, Time To Shine holds absolutely no responsibility. Our Theatre dance floors are not suitable for Acro moves and do not encourage the use of Acro during a dance routine, We encourage the true form of dance & no additional points will be gained by including acrobatic moves in your routine. All Acro moves are done at own risk.
Variation – Routine must be from a Classical Ballet. Dancer must nominate which variation they will be performing. Dancer should bring rosin to use if floor is slippery.
Any Style – Dancer can perform any genre in this category.
Vocal Modern – Must be a song from a modern piece. Performer may or may not choose to use a microphone.
Vocal Musical Theatre – Must be a song from a Musical Theatre piece. Performer may or may not choose to use a microphone.
Vocal Any Style – Can be a song from any piece. Performer may or may not choose to use a microphone.
ADJUDICATOR
1. The Adjudicator’s decision is final.
2. Any competitor who has been taught regularly by the Adjudicator within the preceding six months will not be eligible to compete and must withdraw immediately, or be disqualified. This excludes workshop classes and/or industry briefings.
3. Any competitor currently represented by an agency affiliated with the Adjudicator must declare this prior to entry.
4. The Adjudicator has the right to withhold a prize if he/she does not feel a sufficient standard has been reached.
5. The Adjudicator must not be approached by any competitor/parent/teacher for any reason or that competitor will be disqualified.
6. The Adjudicator may apply a penalty if time limit is exceeded.
BACKSTAGE
1. No parent is permitted backstage at any time.
2. For 6/U sections one studio teacher may be permitted, at backstage manager discretion only.
3. Anyone causing a disturbance backstage may be asked to leave by the backstage manager and must comply.
4. There is to be no spectating backstage, entry to back stage will be directed by the backstage manager and in line with the COVID-19 plan
5. No mobile phones permitted backstage.
COMPETITOR BREAKDOWN
In the case of a competitor breakdown, a repeat of the routine is allowable AGES 12U. OR at the sole discretion of the Adjudicator. However, the competitor will not be eligible for any prize except highly commended, at the discretion of the Adjudicator.
DRESSING ROOMS
1. No changing is permitted in the auditorium toilets or auditorium.
2. Dressing rooms must be kept clean and free of rubbish and sanitised at the end of each session.
3. Dressing rooms must be left clean at end of troupe completion or. In the event they are left unclean, a cleaning fee will be invoiced to the offending studio.
SAFETY AND DISCLAIMER
1. Every care will be taken for the safety of competitors. However, parents and guardians including teachers are also required to supervise their children when they are not backstage (i.e. in the dressing rooms, theatre foyer and surrounds)
2. Basic first aid facilities will be available. Please inquire at the canteen, backstage or ask a staff Member. Any accidents or injuries must be reported immediately and all first aid will be administered with the assistance of the Venue staff.
3. All competitors compete at own risk. TTS & all staff associated will not be held responsible for any injuries that may occur during our event
4. All Acro moves are done at own risk. It is compulsory for any routine that contains drops to wear knee pads. If injury occurs and proper precautions were no taken, Time To Shine holds absolutely no responsibility.
5. Time to Shine Dance Comps, staff Members and all parties involved with the Time to Shine Dance Comps will not accept any liability for loss, damage, injury or inconvenience that might occur to any person or goods as a consequence of their participation in the Competition or attendance at it.
TIME LIMITS
All routines have a time limit, which should be adhered to;
Solos 3 mins, song & dance 4 mins & troupes 5 mins. Champs 4 mins. Any routine that goes over time by more than 15 seconds will be penalised points
Time starts once the competitor enters the stage or the music starts.
It is the performers responsibility to have music recorded to a satisfactory level, music will NOT be adjusted to suit the track being played, this includes singing sections.
MUSIC
Time to Shine Dance Comps is a family Competition. Music, choreography and costumes must be suitable for family viewing. Failure to comply will result in disqualification.
Music is now registered ONLINE – instructions for this will be provided once entries are complete. Only MP3 Format will be accepted.
All music must be uploaded and checked into the music system within the time frame given for the given event.
4. Each competitor understands that a small fee will be applied at completion of upload and payable by the entrant. The Committee reserves the right to change the format in which music is received prior to the competition start date.
5. It is the responsibility of the competitors to ensure that the correct music files have been uploaded to each routine. If a music file is corrupt we would hope to have this identified in the 10 days prior to comp. However, TTS do not have the ability to fix this, effort will be made to advise you if possible. However, music files are the sole responsibility of the entrant to ensure they are accurate and playable audio upon upload.
6. It is the responsibility of the performer to have a backup of their music. This can be either USB or iPhone. IF back up is required, due to music & voice critiques being digital & synced, it is possible that the dancer will not receive a voice critique for the routine were back up music has been used.
7. $50 late fee will be payable for all music uploaded after the final cut off.
8. Backstage staff only will operate all music equipment.
9. Vocals are permitted to Tap music, however please ensure they do not overwhelm the tapping.
10. Competitors may NOT accompany pre-recorded vocals in song and dance routines.
11. Each dancer will have registered with the Music upload program when requested to do so after entry, they are responsible for remembering their log in details and passwords as this is where any music changes can be made leading up to the event. Including checking music during the event.
12. Voice critique will be provided in the same account as music uploads. This will usually occur within 48-72 hours after the end of the competition.
MEDIA
1. No photographs OR video may be taken in the theater at any time. Offenders will be made delete footage, leave the event & the dancer will be disqualified.
2. TTS will endeavor to have Media Team at all events. No responsibility will be taken if Media is not able to be sourced for any events,
3. Only the official Media Team nominated by TTS is permitted to take photographs and or video in the theater.
4. Failure to comply with this WILL result in disqualification.
PROMPTING
No prompting is permitted in any section other than 6/U sections.
PROTESTS
1. The Adjudicators decision is final.
2. TTS reserves the right to adjudicate in any conflict and their decision is final.
3. Protests much be lodged within thirty minutes of the section’s adjudication. The protest must be in writing, handed to a staff Member and must be accompanied by a $50.00 fee, which is non-refundable if protest is not upheld.
PROGRAM & CHANGES
1. Once a draft program is created 3 weeks prior to Event, 1 week for changes to the program will be granted, Then a week for music uploads will be given. A fee of $20 per change is payable for any change that is not an administration error during this time. Changes from one section to another is permitted with fee payable, Order of performance is permitted with fee payable. Complete moving of sections is not permitted. Age changes is permitted with fee payable. All changes are subject to availability and space.
2. TTS uses competition management software to take online entries and develop the program. Competitors will be allocated to sections by the program This may mean that a competitor is the same competitor number in every section they compete in.
REFUNDS
If the Competition is unable to go ahead as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic or other catastrophic OR unforeseen event, our event may be postponed. If this is the case, ALL entries will be moved to the new dates.
If the dancer is unable to attend the new dates, a CREDIT will be provided to attend another Time to Shine Event for the following 12 months. If TTS is forced cancel an event due to Covid, refunds will be offered minus the all out of pocket, administration fees and banking fees This amount being no less than the equivalent to 50% of the total entry paid. OR $75 whichever is greater OR Entrants may opt for the credit option instead.
If Injury occurs and dancer is unable to participate, at the digression of TTS, a refund may be given less administration fees upon presentation of a doctors certificate confirming injury.
No other refunds will be given once entries are received unless the event is Cancelled by TTS.
TEACHERS
1. ONE Teacher may accompany 6/U solos/duos/trios and any age troupe backstage. At the discretion of the backstage manager.
2. If distressing other competitors, Teachers may be asked to leave by backstage manager and must comply immediately.
THEATRE
1. No eating, drinking or smoking in the theatre.
2. Fire Exits must be kept clear at all times.
3. No entry/exit is allowed to/from the Theatre Auditorium when an act is on stage.
4. In circumstances where the theatre seating is full, non-paying competitors must give up their seat for a paid ticket holder.
5. During the COVID-19 pandemic seating will be managed differently – please refer to COVID- 19 Plan.
PROPS
If a dancer has a prop, ONE person is permitted to be backstage to place prop onstage & remove again once routine is complete.
The dancer is responsible for the clean up after the use of their prop. If the competition needs to be stopped to ‘clean up’ the stage after a prop, the dancer will be penalised points.
TICKETS
Tickets are available to purchase at the door during troupe day,at the venue $10 P/P per session. Children U12 $5, U5 Free (must sit on parent’s lap)
INDEMINITY
All attendees, including but not limited to, Dancers, Parents/Carers, Teachers, Directors, Volunteers and Patrons, indemnify and keep indemnified TIME TO SHINE DANCE COMPS. and its Committee Members and operators on both a commercial and personal basis against all actions, suits, proceedings, claims, demands, costs, and expenses whatsoever which may be made against TTS and or its staff and or volunteer members in carrying out the duties and requirements in terms of the event and these rules.
COVID-19 CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:
1. You or anyone accompanying you are not showing signs or symptoms of a cough, cold or flu at the time of the event as stated by the ACT Government COVID-19 Restrictions
2. You do not have a fever, above 37.5 degrees Celsius, at the time of the event.
3. You are NOT supposed to be in isolation at the time the event commences as per current government guidelines.
4. You agree to follow the directions of the COVID-19 Plan and Rules annexed to this document provided with these rules at all times when in attendance of TIME TOSHINE DANCE COMPS EVENT
5. You agree to not cover up any cough or cold, and will remove yourself or anyone accompanying you that have these symptoms.
6. You will sign the liability waiver at point of entry of your routines – this is a STRICT CONDITION OF ENTRY without agreement your entry will not be processed.
7. Contact tracing will apply during this event. Therefore, all attendees MUST complete the required attendance forms provided prior to the event.
8. You understand that failure to comply with the direction of the Committee regardless of how unreasonable it may seem, may result in immediate removal from the premises and competition without refund.
9. You agree to take on the responsibility of those accompanying you the entrant, including but not limited to extended family or friends and dancers that may attend as patrons, siblings’, parents and teachers. Ensuring they are always following the directions of the committee while in the premises.
10. You understand that patronage will be limited and you may not get to spectate all routines.
11. You understand that physical distancing must be applied at all times inside the venue except when performing on stage.
12. You have read and fully understand the COVID-19 Plan and Rules annexed to this document, prepared by TIME TO SHINE and agree to follow these rules at all times whilst in attendance of the event.
13. All entries are to be done online and payment cleared before your entries will be accepted
14. All music is to be uploaded online 10 days prior to the event.
15. Critiques will be available through a log in system – instructions on this will follow later. .
TTS reserves the right to alter the program or run sheet accordingly. This includes amending times to ensure a smooth run of the competition.
TTS reserves the right to run up to TWO hours early & therefore it is a good idea to arrive early in case this may be the case.
TTS holds NO responsibility if you miss your event if we have run early. WE WILL UPDATE OUR FACEBOOK PAGE AND INSTAGRAM PAGE DURING DAYS OF COMPETITION REGARDING RUNNING TIMES ETC, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION.
TTS reserves the right to alter prizes according to numbers.
TTS reserves the right to update rules & pricing at any time. This will not effect entries fees of already entered participants.
Presentation are done at the end of each session. You must be present at the presentation to receive your prize. TTS will not post out due to you not staying for presentation. You may have someone collect it on your behalf.

TTS does not offer draws as prizes, In the instance of a draw the adjudicator will make a decision at their discretion, This decision will be based on overall competition performance.

TTS reserves the right to alter prizes pending numbers.
The adjudicator reserves the right to not award placing’s if they do not feel that the standard for that particular award has been met.
PARENTS CODE OF CONDUCT
Encourage your children to participate in a sportsmanlike manner, encourage other dancers.
Teach your children that their best is enough and that’s a win in itself.
Applaud all dancers, your children learn from example
Do not criticize, bully or humiliate any other person in front of others
Accept t& respect he judges decision.
Show respect for TTS staff & volunteers
Be responsible for your children, know where they are at all times
Be respectful of dancers whilst onstage performing, do not enter or exit the theatre until the routine has concluded.
Respect the theatre & keep it clean & tidy at all times
DANCERS CODE OF CONDUCT
Always act in a sportsman like manner
Be police, respectful & courteous all to other dancers
Applaud other dancers as you would like to be applauded
Respect & Accept the judges decision, just remember its one judges opinion only.
Always try your best. Its not about the trophy or the awards, its about the experience you will gain from perfecting your craft.
Be respectful of TTS staff & volunteers at all times.
Be respectful of the theatre, keep it clean & tidy at all times.
Do not bully or intimidate any other person
PREVENTION OF BULLYING POLICY STATEMENT
Our comp expects that EVERYONE at our competitions shall treat each other with respect and dignity, in an effort to provide a healthy environment that is cohesive and comfortable for ALL. The comp will NOT tolerate any Bullying or Harassment.
Bullying behavior can include but is not limited to
1. Verbal abuse or shouting;
2. Physical Abuse;
3. Excluding or isolating a person;
4. Psychological harassment;
5. Humiliating a person through sarcasm, criticism or insults (including bullying through on-line systems);
6. Ignoring or belittling a person’s contribution or opinion.
Time To Shine Dance Competitions encourages the early reporting of any allegations of bullying and harassment where any persons feel that they are the victims of such behaviors; they should discuss the matter directly with the person/people concerned and request an end to the behaviors. Should this approach fail or be inappropriate, the victim can raise the matter with the Directors. Disciplinary action WILL be taken against offenders and anyone who victimizes or retaliates against a person who has made a complaint.
